It has already been pointed out that, geographically speaking, the division of our country into seven regions is simple and is easily comprehended. We, therefore, propose to follow the account as given in the Nadyadi Varṇana section (Ch. 58) of the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa. The Brahmāṇḍa and the Vāyu Purāṇas, and as a matter of fact other Purāṇas also, give us nothing more than what is presented in these two sections of the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa.
