We have therefore to find the nine khaṇḍas of Bhāratavarṣa within India proper which satisfy statements 1-4 mentioned above. But, statement 4, if taken literally as it has been taken by many scholars, apparently presents an anomaly. How can we divide Bhāratavarṣa into regions 'surrounded by sea' and 'mutually inaccessible'? This anomaly is resolved if we take a broader and more rational view of the statement which may be analysed as follows:
