Kāśī. It was one of the ancient janapadas with its capital at Vārāṇasī and was counted among the sixteen Mahājanapadas of India. It extended to and included the southern portion of the Gaṅgā-Gomatī doab and also the Trans-Gaṅgā tract bounded in the north and south by forest belts.
