It is that Purāṇa in which, 'commencing with the story of the birds that were acquainted with right and wrong, everything is narrated by Mārkaṇ- deya'. The birds were of celestial origin. They were born on the field of Kurukṣetra and lived in the Vindhya Mountains. The Purāṇa provides a sort of a supplement to the Mahābhārata filling in the blanks left in some of its narrations. Wilson assigns it to the 9th or 10th century A.D.
