The early chapters of this Purāṇa describe the Avatāras; while in the chapters dealing with the narratives of Rāma and Kṛṣṇa, it follows the Rāmāyaṇa and the Mahābhārata. The chapters describing the earth and the universe are the same as in the Viṣṇu Purāṇa while the Māhātmyas or the legends of holy places particularly of Gayā are added to them. There are also chapters on mysticism, medicine, rhetoric, prosody, grammar, etc.
