The most ancient concept of the earth¹² was that of four dwipas or regions, i.e., Jambū, Uttarakuru, Ketumāla and Bhadrāśwa¹³ partially surrounded by four seas.¹⁴ These four countries were grouped around Meru (south, north, west and east respectively) like the petals of a lotus.
