The Mahābhārata (12, 14, 21-5) presents a different account. It is stated there that Yudhiṣṭira formerly ruled Jambū Dwīpa; Krauñca Dwīpa like Jambū Dwīpa and situated west of Meru; Śaka Dwīpa like Krauñca Dwīpa and situated east of Meru; and Bhadrāśwa equal in size to Śaka Dwīpa and situated north of Meru'.
