In the Purāṇic accounts Śākadwīpa is usually placed sixth in order, but there is a different theory which places it second in order, and this latter tradition seems to be the earlier one. In the passage just quoted from the Mahābhārata Śākadwīpa is assigned second place and more details are given about it than about the other dwīpas.
