(b) It is usually placed sixth in order of enumeration in the majority of the Purāṇas (see Table above), but some Purāṇas and other authorities place it as second. The later tradition seems to be the earlier one. It appears that in the former case the enumeration of dvīpas starts from south-west of Jambū towards the north through west and then again from south-east to north-east. In the latter case the enumeration starts from the southeast of Jambū Dvīpa to its south-west then to the west, then to the north, and finally to the east. In either case the position of the Śākadvīpa remains in the southeast of Jambū Dvīpa and that of Puṣkara to the east of Jambū Dvīpa.
