(1) The characteristic tree of this dwīpa is *śālmalī* or silk-cotton tree which gives the dwīpa its name. This tree is commonly found on the margins of equatorial regions or of monsoon lands with moderate rainfall. Hence we should locate Śālmaladvīpa in the rainy tropical belt of the old world.
