Details of a few main ranges, mentioned above, are given in the Purāṇas in different chapters. There are whole chapters on Meru and the Himavān, Niṣadha, Devakūṭa and Kailāsa ranges but the account of the ranges north of Meru is strikingly bare and sketchy. Besides, while the southern ranges are sanctified by their association with a number of gods, the northern ranges are in general not so honoured. The reason is obvious; the Purāṇics were more interested in the southern and central regions of Asia with which they were directly associated for thousands of years.
