Ambara.—The country of Jaipur, so called from its ancient capital of that name now called Amer, which is said to have been founded by Ambarīṣa, son of Māndhātṛ (Arch. S. Rep., Vol. 2), and hence Amer is a corruption of Ambarīṣanagara. During the reign of Akbar, Man Singh made the Dilaram garden on the bank of the Tal Kautara Lake at the foot of the Amer palace or fort. Within the latter is the temple of the goddess called Jasareśwarî Kâlî taken away by Man Singh from Jessore after subjugating Pratâpâditya.
