Yessaval—Ahmedabad was founded on the site of the ancient city of Yessaval by Ahmed Shah of Guzerat in 1412 (Thornton's *Gazetteer*). Yessaval is a corruption of Âsâwal or ancient Âsapalli (*Antiquities of Kathiawad and Kachh*, by Burgess ; *Bomb. Gaz.*, I, pt. I, p. 170). Ahmedabad was also formerly called Karṇavatî (Fergusson's *Hist. of Indian and Eastern Architecture*, p. 527).
