Chaṇḍelgada—Chunar. The name of Chaṇḍelgada has been derived from the Chaṇḍels, a tribe of Kshattriyas who had established their sway between Mirzapur and the districts of Shahabad. They originally came from Mahoba (modern Bundelkhand) and took possession of the fort after the Pâla Râjâs. See Charaṇadri.
