Godavari--The river Godâvarî has its source in Brahmagiri, situated on the side of a village called Tryamvaka, which is twenty miles from Nasik (Saura P., ch. 69; Brahma P., chs. 77, 79). Brahmagiri was visited by Chaitanya (Chaitanya-Charitâmṛita). Some suppose that the river has its source in the neighbouring mountain called Jaṭâphaṭkâ. In Tryamvaka, there is a tank called Kuśâvartta, under which the Godâvarî is said to flow after issuing from the mountain. The portion of the Godâvarî on which Tryamvaka is situated is called Gautamî (see Gautamî). Every twelfth year, pilgrims from all parts of India resort to this village for the purpose of bâthing in this sacred tank ve Great Liṅgas of Mahâdeva (*Śiva* and worshipping Tryamvakeśvara, one of the tweḷśvara. Râmachandra is said to have P., Pt. I., ch. 54 ; *Varâha P.*, chs. 79, 80): see Amarṭlam in the Godâvarî district where crossed the river on his way to Laṅkâ at Bhadrâcha a temple marks the spot. *Harshacharita*, ch. VI).
