² The earliest mention of the Kāsīs as a tribe seems to be met with in the Paippalāda recension of the Atharva Veda. The city of Kāsī is stated in the Brāhmaṇas to have been situated on the Varaṇāvatī river (CHI., p. 117). According to the Rāmāyaṇa, Kāsī was a kingdom while Prayāga with the country around was still a forest (Ādikāṇḍa, XII, 20). In the Vāyu Purāṇa, the kingdom of Kāsī is stated to have extended up to the river Gomati.
