¹ The exact site of Kusīnārā is not known, but the discovery in the large stūpa behind the Nirvāna temple near Kasia of an inscribed copper-plate with the words '(parini) rvāna-chaitye tāmrapatta iti' seems to support the view that Kasia is probably the ancient Kusīnārā. With regard to the identification of Pāvā, we are still less certain. Carlleyle disagrees with Cunningham and seems to identify Pāvā with Fazilpur, 10 miles south-east of Kasia (CAGI., p. 714).
