Avanti is mentioned in the Aṅguttara Nikāya as one of the sixteen great janapadas. From the Dipavaṃsa (Oldenberg’s ed., p. 57) we know that Ujjeni, the capital of Avanti, was built by Accutagāmi. Ujjeni is also referred to in Minor Rock Edict No. 2 of Asoka. A kumāra was in charge of a province with his headquarters at Ujjeni.
