In the Mahāvaṃsa Ṭīkā (pp. 119-121) we are told that some Śākyas being oppressed by King Viḍūḍabha fled to the Himalayas where they built the Moriyanagara. It is now generally accepted that Candagutta, grandfather of Asoka the Great, belonged to the Moriya clan which had its seat of government at Pipphalivana. Kapilavatthu is referred to in both the Ceylonese chronicles, the Dīpavaṃsa and the Mahāvaṃsa.
