Vedisa, mentioned in Barhut inscriptions, is Pāli Vidisā and Sanskrit Vaidiśa. It is, according to Cunningham, the old name of Besnagar, a ruined city situated in the fork of the Bes or Vedisa river and the Betwa within 2 miles of Bhisa. Vaidiśa was, according to the Purānas, situated on the bank of the Vidisā river which took its rise from the Pāripātra mountain.
