Benares, the capital of Kāśī, figures in the story of Kṛṣṇa’s quarrel with Puṇḍva. King Puṇḍva, aided by the king of Benares, fought with Kṛṣṇa Vāsudeva who defeated and killed Puṇḍva, and burnt the city of Benares.¹³
