Vardhamāna Mahāvīra was born in Magadha,⁴ and he once preached at the court of Bimbisāra with so much force and good logic that the heir, prince Nandisena, was converted.⁵ Mahāvīra spent fourteen rainy seasons in Rājagṛha.⁶ The eleven Gandharvas of Mahāvīra died in Rājagṛha after fasting for a month.⁷ Jaya, son of King Samudravijaya of Rājagṛha, renounced the world and practised self-restraint.⁸
