In the *Dīpavaṃsa*,¹ we read that Ujjenī (Ujjayinī) was built by Accutagāmī. Watters ² points out that the Avanti capital Ujayana mentioned by Hsüan Tsang is generally supposed to be the well-known Ujain or Ujjen (Ujjain). In some of the canonical scriptures, Ujain is located to the west of Kanoj, which lies between Ujain and Benares.
