Apayā.—It is a river mentioned in the Ṛgveda (III. 23, 4) flowing between the Dṛṣadvatī and the Sarasvatī. Some have identified it with the Āpagā as a name for the Ganges. It is near the Sarasvatī, according to Zimmer.¹¹ It is a small tributary flowing past Thaneswar. It is known to some as a branch of the Chitang river.¹² This river is also mentioned in the Mahābhārata (III. 83, 68).
