According to the Rummindei Inscription, king Aśoka personally came and honoured this city because the Buddha was born here. He erected a stone pillar to mark the site of the Buddha’s birth. He made Lumbinīgrāma free from taxes, and the villagers had to pay an eighth share of their produce (C.I.I., III, 264-65). For further details, vide B. C.
