The artistic traditions of the north-west obtained a strong foothold in the Jain reliefs of Mathurā.³ Many dated and undated Buddha and Bodhisattva images have been unearthed here. The temples of Mathurā struck Mahmud of Ghazni with such admiration that he resolved to adorn his own capital in a similar style. For explorations at Mathurā, vide *A.S.I.*, Annual Report, pp. 120ff. For further details Vide Law, *Indological Studies*, Pt. III.
