It figures prominently in Buddhist and Jain stories. It was a great seat of learning in ancient India. Pupils from different parts of India visited this place to learn various arts and sciences. Prasenajit the king of Kośala and Jīvaka the renowned physician at the court of king Bimbisāra of Magadha, were educated here (B. C. Law, Historical Gleanings, Ch. I). A very beautiful picture of the student-life of those days has been given in a Jātaka (Vol. II, p. 277).
