The *Mahāvaṃsa* refers to a tank in the Aśokārāma (V. 163). Aśoka sent a minister to this *ārāma* asking the community of monks to hold here the Uposatha ceremony (*Ibid.*, V, 236). A compilation of the true Dhamma was made in this *ārāma* (*Ibid.*, V, 276). From this *ārāma* the elder named Mittiṇṇa came to Pāṭaliputra with many monks (*Ibid.*, XXIX, v. 36).
