Campā.—This river forms the boundary between Aṅga in the east and Magadha in the west.¹ It is probably the same river as the one to the west of Campānagar and Nāthnagar in the suburb of the town of Bhāgalpur. It was formerly known by the name of Mālinī.² Kālidāsa refers to the ripples of the Mālinī river on the banks of which Śakuntalā came with her friends (Abhijñānaśakuntalam, Act III). According to the Padma Purāṇa (Ch. 11) it was a place of pilgrimage.
