Lohit.—The great tributary, which meets the Brahmaputra in the district of Sadiyā, is the Lohit or Lauhitya (Mahābhārata, Bhīṣmaparva, Ch. 9; Anuśāsanaparva, 7647; cf. Rāmāyaṇa, Kiṣkindhyākāṇḍa, XL, 26; Asiatic Researches, Vol. XIV, p. 425). It flows from north-east above the Namkiu mountains as the united flow of four streams (Law, Rivers of India, p. 30). This river formed the boundary of Prāgjyotiṣa or Gauhati in Assam (Raghuvamśa, IV, 81).
