Śrīcaitanya, the great founder of new Vaiṣṇavism in Bengal, left this place which was his birthplace at the age of 24 and lived the life of a hermit. The ruins of the palace built by Ballālasena are still found on the eastern coast of the Ganges, half a mile to the north of the present Māyāpura. A court of justice was established here by Aśokasena, grandson of Lakṣmaṇasena and great-grandson of Ballālasena. At one time, it was a great centre of Sanskrit learning (*Introducing India*, Pt. I, 73-74).
