Pāṇḍuyā.—(i) This place commonly known as Peḍo is situated at a distance of 38 miles from Calcutta. It is in the Hooghly district and is quite distinct from Pāṇḍuyā of the Malda district. In the 15th century A.D. Samsuddin Isuf Shah, king of Gauḍa, conquered this Hindu kingdom of Pāṇḍuyā, which contained many Hindu temples. An ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Sun God was converted into a mosque. There is a minar 127 ft. high and there are two tanks, known as the Jorāpukur and the Pirpukur.
