Ancient Anga is said to have included the hermitage of the sage Ṛṣya-śṛṅga, Karṇagaḍ or the fort of Karṇa, Jahnu-āśrama or the hermitage of the sage Jahnu and Modāgiri or Monghyr. The Mahābhārata mentions Anga and Vaṅga as forming one viṣaya or kingdom (44. 9). The kingdom of Anga was in the Buddha’s time a centre of activities of some well-known heretical teachers.⁸
