The rampart to the north of the stone gate, better known as the Murchapāhār, the silent spectator of many historic events, has always been a favourite haunting place of thoughtful minds. Standing there one has his mind filled with sadness looking at the panorama of historic scenes on all sides, when the sun slowly fades behind the Mahārāṣtradāṅga to the west. A pall of darkness has now fallen over this historic city and its ruins (J. N. Mitra, The Ruins of Viṣṇupura, pp. 13-16).
