Nothing is known about the extent of Pūrṇa-varman's kingdom beyond the area covered by his inscriptions, or of its history after him. But it appears from the Chinese chronicles that quite a large number of petty kingdoms flourished in the island in the sixth century or earlier still. The annals of the T'ang period (A.D. 618-906) mention Ho-ling as the name of the kingdom of Java. Ho-ling is generally regarded as a Chinese transcription of Kaliṅga, the name of a well-known region in the eastern coast of India.
