If we take Suvarṇadvīpa in the Nālandā Inscription in this general sense there is no contradiction involved by calling Bālaputra as lord of Suvarṇadvīpa and his grandfather, a king of Java. It would imply that starting from their base in Java, the Śailendras gradually made themselves masters of the whole of the Malay Archipelago or the greater part of it, and this was accomplished by the middle of the 9th century A.D.
