Lokayata is recorded or mentioned in a number of Buddhist texts. Beside Hinayana and Agama sutras, Mahayana texts also contain Lokayata discussion. According to Buddhist records, when at the Nalanda, Xuanzang argued with non-Buddhist schools, indicating that Lokayata was very active in India in the 7ᵗʰ century CE.
