Monks from the western region such as Dharmaraksa and Kumarajiva and three famous masters in the Kaiyuan Period (the Indian monks Shan Wuwei, Bukong and Vajrabodhi) propagated Buddhism in Chang’an and translated Buddhist scriptures. Japanese and Korean monks such as Konghai, Yuanxing, Yuanren and Bukesiyi also studied the Buddhist scriptures and Chinese culture in Chang’an.
