³ Cf. *Baudhāyana Dharmasūtra*, II, 2, 16 : प्राग्दर्शनात्प्रत्यक्कालकवनाद्दक्षिणेन हिमवन्तमुदक् पारियात्रमेतदार्यावर्त्तम् । तस्मिन् य आचारः स प्रमाणम् । गंगायमुनयोरंतरमित्येके । अथात्र भाल्लविनो गाथामुदाहरन्ति— पश्चात्ति्सन्धुविसरणी सूर्यस्योदयनं पुरः । यावत्कृष्णो विधावति तावद्वि ब्रह्मवर्वसम् ।। But according to Śaṅkhalikhita : प्राक् सिन्धुसौवीराद्दक्षिणेन हिमवतः पश्चा-त्कांपिल्यात्पारियात्रादनवच्चं ब्रह्मवर्चसम् and according to Paiṭhinasi : आ हिमवत आ च कुमार्याः सिन्धुर्वैतरणी नदी सूर्यस्योदयनं पुरः । यावदा कृष्णमृगो विचरति तत्र धर्मश्चतुष्पादो भवति । See Rangaswami Aiyangar, *Rājadharma* p. 60. It should be noticed that what was originally called Āryāvarta was later named Madhyadeśa while in later times Āryāvarta included the whole of Northern India. This is related to the gradual spread of Aryanism.
