But what should we mean by ‘the Orientals’, *prāñcaḥ*? The grammar, since Pāṇini, knows only two groupings as regards the cardinal points, *viz.*, the Northerners (*udañcaḥ*) and the Easterners (*prāñcaḥ*). A traditional verse quoted by the Kāśikā⁵ and Kṣīrasvāmin¹ establishes that division :
