¹ Three classes of the cakravartin are mentioned in Pali literature, viz. (1) cakravāla-cakravartin, (2) dvīpa-cakravartin and (3) pradeśa-cakravartin. The first is the ruler of all the four dvīpas or continents constituting the earth according to the Buddhists, the second of only one of the dvīpas and the third merely of a portion of a dvīpa. The classification is, however, apparently theoretical.
