Koṅkaṇa has been described as lying on the sea-coast. It seems to have extended from the Ghaṭṭa as far as the middle of the district round Koṭīśa. The Koṅkaṇ, as we know, is the strip of land between the Western Ghāṭs and the Arabian Sea. Ghaṭṭa therefore appears to indicate the Western Ghāṭs, while Koṭīśa reminds us of the famous Koṭeśvara Mahādeva near the sea, not far from Bhuj, the headquarters of Kutch. But this Koṭeśvara is far away from the Koṅkaṇ. Our Koṭīśa may be the same as Saptakoṭīśvara of the inscriptions, and coins of the Kadambas of Goa.² 45. *Kaikaya* (v. 46).
