²³ Vāyu Purāṇa, 34. 37ff. ; cf. Mahābhārata, vi. 6. 12-13 ; etc. The southern continent is called Jambu-dvīpa instead of Bhārata in the Mahābhārata cited above as also sometimes in the Purāṇas ; cf., e.g., Vāyu Purāṇa, 34. 56 ; also Viṣṇu Purāṇa, ii. 2.38 which employs the name Kuru for Uttara-Kuru. Details of the description are not exactly the same in the different Purāṇas. The Vāyu gives the names of the Kulācalas, janapadas, rivers, etc., of Ketumāla (ch. 43), Bhadrāśva (ch. 44) and Uttara-Kuru (ch. 45). In Ch. 45, similar details are also given for Ramaṇaka and Hiraṇvata (cf. infra). The same chapter describes, among other things, Candra-dvīpa (5,000 yojanas to the south of Uttara-Kuru) and its river Candrāvatī as well as the Bhadrākara-dvīpa to its west.
