The number of the dvīpas forming the earth was sometimes also mentioned as nine or thirteen;¹⁷ but these conceptions apparently depended on the idea that the Bhārata-varṣa itself consisted of a number of islands like Indra-dvīpa, Nāga-dvīpa, etc., to which reference will be made below.
