Reference may be made in this connection to the seven Pātālas or nether worlds, viz. Atala, Vitala, Nitala, Gabhastimat, Mahātala, Sutala and Pātāla which are each 10,000 yojanas in extent. These are inhabited by the Dānavas, Daityas, Yakṣas and Nāgas.⁴⁶
