It may be noted that the Rāmāyaṇa, while recounting the names of the rivers, mountains and countries in the east, south, west and north, both within and outside India, in Chapters 40-43 of the Kiṣkindhā-kāṇḍa, does not appear to exhibit any appreciable knowledge of the west. The four lists, which are characterised by some amount of confusion and do not have exactly the same text in different versions of the Rāmāyaṇa, are summarised below from one version.
