14. Kośala—capital in ancient times at Ayodhyā in the Fyzabad District, U.P., according to the Rāmāyaṇa, but at Śrāvastī (the joint village of Set-Mahet or Sahet-Mahet on the borders of the Gonda and Bahraich Districts, U. P.) according to the Buddhist literature. The city of Sāketa, famous in literature and either identical with Ayodhyā or situated on its suburbs, may have been the headquarters of the Kośala territory after the decline of Śrāvastī. There was another Kośala country in the Deccan to the south of the Vindhyas. This Dakṣiṇa-Kośala became famous in Indian geography from the early centuries of the Christian era.⁸
