15. Avanti—people of the Avanti country with their capital at Ujjayinī (modern Ujjain in Western Madhya Pradesh). Early Buddhist literature refers to Avanti-Dakṣiṇāpatha which had its capital at Māhiṣmatī on the Narmadā (modern Māndhātā or Maheśvar in the Nimar region of Madhya Pradesh). It is interesting to note that the Avanti country has been located in the Madhya-deśa instead of the Western Division.
