¹ This is taken primarily from W. H. Schoff's translation of the anonymous Greek work entitled *Periplus maris Erythrae*, composed about the eighth decade of the first century A.D. when Ujjayinī was not a capital city, that is to say, some time before the Kārdamaka-Śakas made Ujjayinī their capital in the second quarter of the second century A.D. Ptolemy mentions Ozene (Ujjayinī) as the capital of Śaka Caṣṭana while the Śaka father-in-law of Ikṣvāku Virapuruṣadatta (3rd century A.D.) is mentioned in a Nagarjunikonda inscription as ‘the Mahārāja of Ujjayinī (Sel. Ins., 2nd ed., p. 231). See *JBRS*, Vol. XLIX, 1963, pp. 28ff. Cf. J. W. McCrindle's translation in *Ind. Ant.*, Vol. viii, pp. 108ff. ; also R. C. Majumdar, *The Classical Accounts of India*, pp. 288ff. In this section, Greek kappa and omicron (in the as ending) are represented by c and u respectively after Schoff.
