47. The country inland from Barygaza is inhabited by numerous tribes, such as the Arattii (Araṭṭa of the Punjab), the Arachosii (people of the Kandahar region), the Gandaraei (Gandhāra of the Rawalpindi region) and the people of Poclais (Puṣkalāvatī in the Peshawar region), in which is Bucephalus Alexandria (on the west bank of the Jhelam). Above these is the very war-like nation of the Bactrians (Kuṣāṇas settled in Northern Afghanistan), who are under their own king. And Alexander, setting out from these parts, penetrated to the Ganges (Gaṅgā),³ leaving aside Damirica (Draviḍa=Tamilaka) and the southern part of India; and to the present day ancient drachmas (coins) are current in Barygaza, coming from this country, bearing inscriptions in Greek letters, and the devices of those who reigned after Alexander, viz., Apollodotus and Menander.
